New Year's Day 108 Sun Salutations hosted by Mary Veal
Monday, January 1st ~ 10am
$18

Celebrate the New Year with the traditional and sacred practice of 108 Sun Salutations. Join Mary Veal and several Kula teachers on the Deck starting at 10am. We'll have charts of the poses, an easy way to count and a "go at your own pace" practice. The Kula teachers will be there to cheer you on, offer modifications and practice right along your side. And remember, it's about the practice, not the number. You may do any number of Sun Salutations of your choice, ie 54, 36, 27, 18, or 9.

In many cultures, light has long been a symbol of consciousness and self-illumination. Our primary source of light is, of course, the sun. When we look at our closest star, we may see nothing more than a big yellow ball. But for thousands of years, the Hindus have revered the sun, which they call Surya, as both the physical and spiritual heart of our world and the creator of all life itself. For the Hindus, the sun is the “eye of the world”, seeing and uniting all selves in itself, an image of and a pathway to the divine. One of the means of honoring the sun is through the dynamic asana sequence Surya Namaskar (better known as Sun Salutation). The Sanskrit word namaskar stems from namas, which means “to bow to” or “to adore.

A mala is an eastern rosary with 108 beads. The mala is used both in Hinduism and Buddhism for counting mantras, chants or prayers. 108 has been a sacred number for a long time, and this number is explained in many different ways. A few being;

SUN AND EARTH: The diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth.

SANSKRIT ALPHABET: There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each has masculine and feminine, shiva and shakti. 54 times 2 is 108

PLANETS AND HOUSES: In astrology, there are 12 houses and 9 planets. 12 times 9 equals 108.

ANAHATA (HEART) CHAKRA: The chakras are the intersections of energy lines, and there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra.
