New Year's Day 108 Sun Salutations hosted by Mary Veal
Monday, January 1st ~ 10am
Celebrate the New Year with the traditional and sacred practice of 108 Sun Salutations. Join Mary Veal and several Kula teachers on the Deck starting at 10am. We'll have charts of the poses, an easy way to count and a "go at your own pace" practice. The Kula teachers will be there to cheer you on, offer modifications and practice right along your side. And remember, it's about the practice, not the number. You may do any number of Sun Salutations of your choice, ie 54, 36, 27, 18, or 9.
In many cultures, light has long been a symbol of consciousness and self-illumination. Our primary source of light is, of course, the sun. When we look at our closest star, we may see nothing more than a big yellow ball. But for thousands of years, the Hindus have revered the sun, which they call Surya, as both the physical and spiritual heart of our world and the creator of all life itself. For the Hindus, the sun is the “eye of the world”, seeing and uniting all selves in itself, an image of and a pathway to the divine. One of the means of honoring the sun is through the dynamic asana sequence Surya Namaskar (better known as Sun Salutation). The Sanskrit word namaskar stems from namas, which means “to bow to” or “to adore.
A mala is an eastern rosary with 108 beads. The mala is used both in Hinduism and Buddhism for counting mantras, chants or prayers. 108 has been a sacred number for a long time, and this number is explained in many different ways. A few being;
SUN AND EARTH: The diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth.
SANSKRIT ALPHABET: There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each has masculine and feminine, shiva and shakti. 54 times 2 is 108
PLANETS AND HOUSES: In astrology, there are 12 houses and 9 planets. 12 times 9 equals 108.
ANAHATA (HEART) CHAKRA: The chakras are the intersections of energy lines, and there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra.

Whale sharks, the world’s gentle giants, are the largest fish on the planet. Their majesty and mystery have always intrigued humans. They gracefully glide through the water living peacefully in the oceans, and many who have swam with one in the wild have described the moment as a religious experience.
Sami Kattan of Nomad Creative created his first environmental documentary, The Global Connection: Little Island, Big Fish in 2016. Since then, he has been working to increase awareness to keep these beautiful animals protected, in addition to educating the public about the effects tourism has on local communities.
Our Whale Shark Pilgrimage will take us to Isla Holbox, Mexico, an island at the northern tip of the Yucatan peninsula. We will explore the community, interact with locals, and experience the exceptional beauty this part of the world has to offer - described as a fully intact ecosystem. This will be a real, authentic local experience and eco conscious experience. We’ll stay in locally owned hotels, use local tour operators and eat in family owned restaurants. Local venues will be our path over corporate outlets on this trip!

Travel to a wonderland of icy waterfalls, crystalline tunnels, and black-sand beaches dusted with diamantine icebergs. This is Iceland in the winter, a fantasy landscape that never gets too cold thanks to its Gulf Stream position. Short sunlight hours are made beautiful as the low-hanging sun bathes the country in golden light during the winter days, and darkness brings glimpses of the NORTHERN LIGHTS dancing across the night sky during the long nights. Witness Iceland’s iconic natural scenes with a dusting of pure snow, float in warm thermal pools beneath the stars, and explore a glacier from within its pure blue ice tunnels. But get to know the heart of Iceland when you meet the resilient people who call this home, even during the long winter months: the greenhouse farmers and fishermen who sustainably maintain the food supply, the farmers who raise majestic Icelandic horses, and a local family who invites you in for a meal. Our small group will afford us the opportunity to delve deeper into the culture through conversations with these local residents. Iceland is special year-round—but magical in the winter.
